I TRIed – My first Triathlon

Before starting let me thank my friend for helping in achieving this.

It was a long time desire to attempt a Triathlon. The definition says “an athletic contest consisting of three different events, typically swimming, cycling, and long-distance running”. I did all this together one after the other. I attempted the Sprint Triathlon (750 m swim + 20 km cycle + 5 km run) in the specific order.

After deciding to not run the SCMM this time this attempt of the triathlon will give me some happiness.

I wanted to get a first hand experience of what Triathlon will be. The smallest of all the triathlon event is the Sprint Triathlon. Instead of participating in an event I decided to attempt on my own. It was a good decision to do it. I realized how difficult and tasking it is to attempt one.

Tri Day :
I got up at 4am as the excitement to attempt the triathlon was quite high. I freshened up and headed towards JP Park swimming pool.

Swim :
Just before I entered the pool there was an urgency to relieve myself. I finished the process by 5 mins. Freely I entered the pool by 6:20 to start the swim session. The pool is very good. It is a 50m pool. My shoulders were stiff after my yesterdays 1KM swim .  Nevertheless I was able to finish the 750 m swim in approximately 30 mins. I felt not a bad start to my first Triathlon attempt. I didn’t want to take it simple as the daunting 20km cycle ride and 5 km run is in front of me. It would not be easy as swimming. I got out of the pool and took a quick bath and changed to my basic cycling gear to start the cycle session.

Swimming Session : 750 m in 30min 25 sec

Cycle :
Immediately after the swim session I started the cycling. Cycle was ready outside the pool. Thanks to my friend who was kind enough to get the cycle to the pool. My cycle is Firefox and it is a MTB. Attempting a cycle ride in a MTB is slightly difficult and to cover a long distance of 20 km will take its own time.
I started the cycling from JP Park – Mekhri Circle – CPRI – MS Ramaih hospital – New Bel road – and then back via same route to Sankey Tank. This route was quite tough considering the elevation . The route was full of up and down. The toll on the legs were  more. Eventually I was able to finish the 20km cycle ride successfully in 1hr 35mins . It was a satisfying ride as I was able to finish the ride with no much issue. One funny incident happened during the cycling session. By mistake I had kept the setting of my watch to track the distance in miles. Even though I was pushing myself to a faster ride the speed was not going beyond 7. It was 7 miles/hr but I considered 7km/hr. At exactly 16th km when it showed only 10 (mile). I stopped and checked the setting. Then I found it was in miles. I changed it to kms. So the 10 mile automatically got converted to 16km. That was a quick boost to my confidence. If I would have not checked the setting then I would have done 20 mile which is 32 km. I didn’t want to do a 32 km at this stage just by mistake. I wanted to stick to my normal 20km cycle ride.

Post Cycling

Cycling Session – 20 km in 1hr 35min

Run :
After finishing ride I parked my cycle near Sankey tank. Started my running immediately. Running has always been my favorite sport. But in this case it was tough. Running post cycling is tough and today I realized. Its good that you get some realization. The distance was 5km and it was not a big distance for me. But still completing 5km run was a challenge on its own considering the swimming session and cycling session just before this. And to top that Sun was saying hello with its bright smile. And it made it even more difficult. Just after 2km I took a 30 second break to drink water. In the end I finished the 5 km run in 44 mins. Not the best of the timing but satisfied.

Post Running

Running Session : 5 km in 44 mins

Finally I finished my first every Triathlon (Sprint Triathlon). Hopefully I will attempt more triathlons with better timings and distance.
Swimming : 750 m – 00:30:36
Cycling : 20 km – 01:35:33
Running : 5 km – 00:44:41
Overall time : 2:50:50

Life Lessons from Triathlon
1) There will always be starting issues everywhere. That shouldn’t  stop someone from doing what is good.
2) Life is full of ups and downs. During cycling the most difficult task is the uphill. But we should always believe there will be a downhill ride, we can relax a bit at that time. But after the downhill ride we should not be complacent as after the downhill there will be a road with no elevation, still we have keep pedaling to keep moving. In life also we should keep moving even if there are lots of ups and downs.
3) Triathlon is full of spice. There is Swimming, Cycling, Running. Similarly in life also we should attempt different things to keep us sane.
4) Nothing is easy in life. Everything is tough and we have toil hard to get it. For me running was easy, but post swimming and cycling it was quite tough. So nothing should be taken for granted.
5) Don’t be in a hurry. Things what you started will surely be completed but take your time and finish it.

There are many other points which one can ponder upon.

Moral :  First ever triathlon was a wonderful experience.

To Do – 2017

I should not keep a resolution in 2017. I realized all these years I kept resolutions and unfortunately I failed miserably in maintaining those.

This year I will just change the name from Resolution to To Do. Not sure will this work, but there is always a hope.

The following is the list of To Do’s in 2017. Which is only personal. The rule I put on myself is to add to the list but never delete or rectify the existing list. I read somewhere that if the goals are written somewhere then it becomes more authentic and we will get diligent to follow them. After a year I would like to review what all points I was able to complete successfully. These to do’s will range from achievements or targets or habits or anything which will make it challenging and fun.

To Do’s 2017
(Added on 02-January-2017)
1. Run a total distance of 2500 km , Cycle a total distance of 1000 km.
2. Lose 10kg. Current weight 97.4 kg
3. Get some health statistics under control.Thyroid,Sugar level, Cholesterol
4. Eat more of fruits and vegetables.
5. Leave processed sugar
6. Say no to junk food
7. Read a minimum of 15 books. (Excluding technical ones)
8. Stop using un parliamentary words
9. Keep detailed log of expenses
10. Shave beard every week

The list looks exhaustive. But more or less all the points relate to each other. In future if any new points I feel needs to be there in To Do list I will surely update it with a date.

Wish the new year brings lot of happiness everywhere.

Happy New Year

Happy new year – 13 km run

Happy new year . Hope everyone gets whatever they want . Spread happiness and joy. Keep running.

I thought I will run today and I did the same. I went to Sankey tank to run. It was a good run. I had the energy to go beyond 13 km but I stopped. May be at times you need to keep it simple and limited.

I took few pictures in Sankey tank. Pictures were quite awesome.

New year resolution for me. Hopefully I try to be a better person this year. There is always a hope of improvement in every aspect of life.
Lets all start the year with a positive note.

Cheers

15 km run

After a break of 8 days I resumed running. Initial plan was to attempt a long distance of more than 20 km. But I had to keep myself happy with 15 km. Considering my break I did well. The route was having lots of ups and downs. I took a short break at 9.5 km to purchase water.

I deliberately took a route which will have lot of elevation. May be that is the right way to attemp some tough routes every now and then to keep ourself challenging.

I went from Mahalakshmi Layout – Chord road – Vijay nagar – Basaveshwarnagar – Ambedkar stadium. Did one loop of ambedkar stadium Took an auto to return back home.

It feels good to run.

Some pictures which was taken post run .

No running for more than a week

Its been a lazy week. Last run was of a 18km run in Mumbai. Something is stopping me from getting up in the morning either the late night sleep or the chilly morning. In either case I should start running else it will be tough to attempt SCMM in January 2017. I am worried that my bones don’t accumulate rust.

Hope to resume my running from tomorrow. Being hopeful is good thing.

Bus Journey after 4 years

After a span of nearly 4 years I travelled via bus from Mumbai to Bangalore. I had to come back to Bangalore just after one day visit to Mumbai due to personal work. The best possible option to travel was via Air. But when I checked the cost of Air travel and it was way too expensive as I wanted it immediately. I checked the cost of Bus travel in RedBus  . The cost difference was almost more than Rs.3500. Then the miser within me told to prefer Bus travel. Then I went ahead and booked a bus ticket to Bangalore from Mumbai in VRL. I was quite excited about the bus journey as it would be my first long distance bus travel after 4 years.

VRL Bus

I chose VRL as a preferred mode of transport. I have good experience in past. I must have travelled umpteen number of times in VRL. This time I did a sleeper booking instead of seater.

The journey was about to begin by 2pm but unfortunately it started by 2:45pm. The journey was about to start from Sion but due to some issues I had to take other VRL bus till Chunnabhatti. These two issues didn’t matter much as I got the bus. As it is known these small issues will happen as it being a road transport.

I was hungry and luckily a guy was selling franky and veg roll during one of intermediate stop in Vashi. Bus conductor told me they wont stop for lunch and that made sense who will eat lunch post 3. I had to suppress my hunger with veg roll and franky. For a hungry person any food will be delicious.

Journey started steadily and I got settled in my L22 seat. In Panvel one guy joined as a co passenger near me.

The first pit stop the bus made was somewhere near to Lonavala. I purchased tea and a samosa to suppress my big tummy from hunger.

The bus was quite clean and I should appreciate VRL for that. Bus had small TV panels to watch movie displayed. I was not much interested to watch TV. But I glanced at it in between. The movie which they showed was Khiladi 786 and Kis Kis ko pyaar karoon . I carried the book The Girl on the train during this travel so I utilized the travel time to read at least some part of the book till evening.

After 7 pm I was feeling sleepy. I slept for couple of hours. Bus stopped for dinner at 10 pm in a restaurant. It was a decent restaurant. I ordered heavy food as I didnt eat well in the afternoon. For dinner I ordered Dal tadka, 2 roti and jeera rice.  Later after ordering I realized the food was quite heavy. But this huge tummy can devour anything in the plate.

Restaurant

After food I started to sleep during the rest of the travel. Sleep was quite disturbing due to the continuous shaky movement of the bus.  During night some thirsty soul took away my water bottle. I had to suppress my thirst till I get home in the morning.

Seat L22

Morning time is the toughest of the whole journey. We have to control the ready to burst bladder and bowel.

Bus reached Yeshwanthpur by 7:30 am. I got down and took a rickshaw till Mahalakshmi Layout to my home.

The journey was quite nice without any hectic and hassle.

Hope to travel more in bus if I need to cut cost.

Journey Details :
Mumbai to Bengaluru
Journey Start : Sion (Mumbai)
Journey via : VRL Bus
Journey Start Time : 2:00pm (Official) 2:45 (Real) (21-12-2016)
Journey End Time : 7:30am (22-12-2016)
Journey End : Yeshwanthpur (Bengaluru)

Moral : Good ride in Bus.
