Mistaken Identity

Place : Near Jalahalli Metro Bangalore

I had experienced one of the worst unusual situation ever in my entire life. Like any other day I was returning back home from Yeshwanthput via metro. I was in a happy and joly mood as I was listening to an interesting podcast.

As soon as I was exiting Jalahalli metro station. One person came from behind and tried to man handle me. I asked him what happened. Then immediately three more people came and started to grab me and started hitting punches by asking my name and asking for my phone. At that time I realised they are thieves . I was stubborn not to give them my belongings. As they found me stubborn and not budging in giving them the phone. They started to hit me badly and pushed me down to the ground. They started kicking me. There were atleast 50 people who gathered but no one came to help me at that time. I was helpless at that time. I repeatedly pleaded them to stop. But everything was in vain. They dragged me to their Innova vehicle and lifted me and pushed me inside their vehicle. On telling them I am not the person they were looking for. But they didn’t hear. The driver started the vehicle. And the other three started to beat me inside the vehicle by asking my name and from where I was returning. They hit my face, my chest, my back. They were continuously hitting me and giving me horrendous abuses.

They were continuously asking my phone but I was not in a mood to give. I thought they will kill me if I don’t give my phone . They even were saying take the car to a secluded place. Finally they took my phone forcefully. They forced me to open the screen lock. One person started to punch in the phone number. But he didnt find that phone number. Immediately they did a video call from their number to someone and asked them “Is he the person”. When the opposite person said I am not the person. They finally said they lifted the wrong person. They let me go. But I took photo of the vehicle number and the phone which they were trying to dial.

I was totally shattered and devastated. I immediately called my colleague and explained . He suggested me to go to the nearby Peenya police station. And he and his wife had contacts and they informed the police inspector about the incident. And the same was suggested when I called number 100 helpline. On going to the police station the police officials immediately attended my plea and listened to me in detail. Thanks to my friend who accompanied me from my colony to the police station and it was helpful.

Police officials noted the vehicle number. And immediately called the vehicle owners and who had rented the vehicle from them. They found that the vehicle was rented by few police person. They had come from Hiriyur and they were looking for a person. They were looking for a person who had done a crime of acid attack on some one. I was having little resemblance and they mis judged me. And they took me in their innova by mistake .That was revealed when the police enquired to him.

Police asked me whether I want to lodge a complaint. I realised it will be of no use to complaint to police against a police. They will rub their shoulders citing it was a mistake. When I asked what will happen if I lodge the complaint they said nothing will happen if I lodge a complaint.

Such is the state of our Police. People who should safeguard us are tormenting us. It would have been easy if they behaved friendly asking for my identity but they chose a wrong approach. Sad reality of our police.

In this whole mistaken identity fiasco the only person who was tortured and injured was me.
